Why should I look into Multisensory Algebra

Despite exemplary effort from teachers, many secondary students continue to fail math achievement tests. In fact, with increased state standards and math requirements, many parents, students, and educators are complaining that graduate rates for students with learning difficulties and disabilities will decrease.

Why do these math issues exist?

1. Poor stepwise curriculum design

2. Students did not master arithmetic

3. The increase of Algebraic notation confuses students

Multisensory Algebra is designed to complement current math curriculum for increased student performance. Multisensory Algebra has been implemented by classroom teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels with effective results. The effects are consistent for students with academic difficulties as well as students with a history of academic success. The reason is that Multisensory Algebra reinforces the basics of arithmetic while learning beginning algebraic thinking skills.

Multisensory Algebra is:

1. A long term solution that students can take with them to further math classes

2. A true conceptual look at algebra in a medium that is more accessible to more students

3. A way to help students learn secondary math through more than one sensory input

Multisensory Algebra uses a sequence of instruction from concrete manipulative objects to pictorial representations to traditional abstract problems to give students multiple opportunities to interact with algebra skills.
